There's a new motel in Blenheim and it's full of creepy crawlies.

Don't worry though, it's not substandard accommodation for humans, but a special place for insects to live and hopefully do good for Blenheim School's vegetable garden.

Pupils built the motel themselves from recycled materials as part of the Graeme Dingle Foundation's primary school life skills and values programme Kiwi Can.

Kiwi Can team leader Di Huntley said the creation of the bug motel was part of learning about respect for the environment "because we have to contribute and do our part".

By attracting insects such as ladybirds and bees, which can benefit the vegetable garden, Huntley said, the children had learned it was possible to do jobs to help themselves and their community "rather than to ring someone else to do it for them".

The motel was built from donated timber pallets and items found at the Marlborough Recycling Centre and Transfer Station including pieces of hosepipe, old pot planters and terracotta pipe.

The children were also asked to bring suitable materials from home.

"It's really hands-on," Huntley said. Succulent plants finished off the motel's aesthetics.

Huntley said the children were keeping a close eye on the motel to see what moved in and some had even caught insects at home to ensure the motel was tenanted.
