The positive response to the announcement the Gore Host Lions is planning to build two three-bedroom transportable houses has heartened the club.

Building the houses is a fundraising project aimed at raising $225,000 to be spread equally over three years, to go towards funding the Kiwi Can programme in schools.

Club president Peter Goodger said of the club's 30 members, eight or nine were tradesmen and building two houses was an achievable goal.

Since publicly announcing the project and calling for community support, the reaction had been positive, Mr Goodger said.

"We've had a lot of good responses.

Members will approach businesses next week asking for donated items to be used in the project.

Community organisations, churches and clubs would also be approached for financial support, Mr Goodger said.

He said the Kiwi Can programme administered by the Graeme Dingle Foundation was positive and worthwhile.

"It's just an amazing programme," he said.

Club members believed primary-aged children were the greatest community resource there was and members had been encouraged by the results of social skills-based learning the programme provided at Longford Intermediate and Mataura Primary schools.

The club had decided to support additional three-year programmes at St Mary's, East Gore and West Gore primary schools, Mr Goodger said.

Each of the two transportable houses to be built on a section in Ardwick St will feature three bedrooms and a mezzanine storage area.

The houses will come complete with chattels such as drapes and carpets.
