Admired for what they can do with a rugby ball, Tasman Mako players can also get the job done with a toothbrush.

Pupils at Redwoodtown School, in Blenheim, were all smiles as three members of the popular rugby team paid a visit to the school as part of a push to help children learn about better oral health.

Vernon Fredericks, Ti'i Paulo, Alex Ainley and Tim O'Malley took to the stage to take part in a light-hearted look at the best ways to brush teeth.

The initiative was the brain child of staff at the Churchill Private Hospital who called on the Tasman Makos and life-skills programme Kiwi Can to help get the message across.

A Churchill Trust spokeswoman said there were still too many children not brushing their teeth properly.

"We really want to raise awareness about this issue.

"We're focusing it around the Colgate Get Mouth Fit campaign and healthy brushing and how to be 'mouth fit'.

"It's surprising the amount of kids not educated on this," she says.

Excited children gathered at windows outside the assembly hall to sneak a peek at the players before the doors opened.

The players' onstage antics kept the children in fits of laughter as they attempted to brush each other's teeth.

Trust staff later handed-out toothbrushes, toothpaste and bottles of water to every child in the school.

Children then paired up to practice brushing themselves and managed to get some autographs too.

Pupil Dita Tahavalu, 11, said she was "really excited" about the day and enjoyed the Makos visit.

"I do always brush my teeth but it's good to know if I'm doing it properly," she said.
