THE GREEN DISINCENTIVE

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are a foray into the Pbooming motoring world of pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs), perhaps your future new car of choice.

What was once a golden child, the PHEV is disappearing from buyers' radar, dwarfed by conventional hybrid vehicles and BEVs.

And yet, the offering is quite broad, with many coming in under the fuel-e?cient vehicles luxury car tax threshold of $89,332 (lifted $4,416 from the previous financial year).

The June VFACTS figures however show only 735 PHEVs hitting the road in comparison to 11,042 BEVs and 9020 hybrids.

Plug-ins play an important part in the automotive sales mix by offering the best of both worlds.

They give conventional combustion mobility with an environmental benefit of limited electric range (usually 50 to 100km) of pollution free propulsion.

And you don't need to rely on the lack of Victorian charging infrastructure, just plug it in at home.

The Victorian government needs to come to the party with support for motorists to incentive them into making greater choices geared around greener vehicles.

Scrapping the $3,000 subsidy for zero-emission vehicles a year early without consultation with VACC gives you the motorist three thousand less reasons to invest, especially in a BEV.

Other states are streets ahead of Victoria in offering incentives to drive PHEV, hybrid and BEV sales.

If you didn't want to consider a PHEV as a stepping stone into the world of electric, then now you are faced with a greater green disincentive thanks to the reverse policies of the Victorian state government.
