So why can't we have tech schools back?
VACC employs over 540 automotive apprentices, but it's still tough finding young people who want to transition from school into an automotive trade.
Other trades have similar issues.
There are many reasons for this, including a deep societal bias toward sending school leavers to university, even when academic rigour does not suit those same school leavers or they haven't had enough work exposure to make an informed decision about their futures.
In the past, tech schools helped tremendously in this development, particularly given much more of the curriculum focused on technology.
There was far more capacity to apply theory to technology application.
It's no wonder we struggle to attract young men and women into trades when they have had so little hands-on exposure to technologies in their formative years.
I don't mean building bridges with straws here; I mean actually building something out of metal or wood.
Some secondary schools still work hard to provide valuable tech studies and many provide automotive subjects, but this isn't the same as being immersed in a school that has fully functioning trade wings and a pool of trade teachers who can integrate secondary school curriculum with real life skills training.
