Geoff Gwilym VACC CEO BUT WILL WE SEE IT AGAIN?

Australian buyers - according to the Federal Chamber of AAutomotive Industries purchased a record 1,216,780 new vehicles during 2023, shading the previous highest sales result of 1,189,116 achieved in 2017.

So, what can we learn from these numbers?

Australia has suffered a supply problem since the COVID-19 pandemic and the bullish results of 2023 show a 'catch-up' situation for buyers and sellers.

That's good news, as dealers' businesses return to something approaching normal trading conditions, and lots of consumers finally collected vehicles they sometimes - ordered a long time ago.

Toyota again claimed the top-selling spot with 17.1 per cent of the market (215,240 sales) but the Japanese brand didn't have it all its own way, with Ford's Ranger displacing the Toyota Hi-Lux as Australia's top-selling vehicle.

After Toyota, the top 10 brands included Mazda (100,008 sales), Ford (87,800), Kia (76,120), Hyundai (75,183), Mitsubishi (63,511), MG (58,346), Tesla (46,116), Subaru (46,114) and Isuzu Ute (45,341).

Battery electric vehicles made up 7.2 per cent of sales, but when combined with hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles that number rose to 16.2 per cent, or 196,868 sales.

These are all promising figures, but I doubt 2024 will produce a similar or better result.

Figures will probably return to the more consistent number of 1.1 million sales this year, and with more alternatives than ever - short-term car and scooter hire and Uber, alongside public transport and more - we may not see 1.2 million sales again, despite an increasing population.

I hope I'm wrong, but only time will tell if the market is in the mood for another record year in the future...
