Craig is nominated for Scenic Hotel Group Sportsman of the Year. He is sponsored by Body Restore Clinic.

A record-setting bike ride has earned Craig Harper the endurance cycling nomination for the 2017 Marlborough Sports Awards.

Earlier this year the 40-year-old cyclist tackled a feat most people can only dream about.

He set off from Cape Reinga at the tip of the North Island on February 20 and rode into Bluff four days, nine hours and 45 minutes later, breaking the existing world record for the length of New Zealand ride by nearly eight hours. In order to achieve his goal he slept for only short periods of one to two hours along the way, taking a big mental and physical toll on the former New Zealand rowing representative.

Harper also had to factor in the closure of State Highway 1 after the Kaikoura earthquake, warranting a change to a more demanding route, but took it all in his stride.

The 2100-kilometre ride also raised approximately $50,000 for the Graeme Dingle Foundation Marlborough which runs Kiwi Can courses for primary school children.

Harper has previously enjoyed long-distance cycling success, winning the 640km Maxi Enduro Lake Taupo event and the 1010km 10-lap Mammoth challenge at the Forrest GrapeRide on home soil.
