Longford Intermediate School pupils invited their grandparents and other role models to school on Monday.

Role Models-Grandparents Day was run at the school as part of Kiwi Can, a values and life skills programme designed for primary and intermediate school pupils.

Kiwi Can leader Emily Stupples said the event gave grandparents and other role models a chance to see what the pupils were working on at school.

"I think it's important for role models to see how the kids are doing in school," Miss Stupples said.

"It's important for the kids as well because it gives them a sense of pride in their work" The event started at noon with a welcome which included a performance by the kapa haka group.

"The welcome was organised by the kids. It's very child-oriented."

The pupils also organised performances and helped in the kitchen, Miss Stupples said.

"It gave the year 7s a chance to step into leadership roles."

The pupils then took their grandparents and other role models back to their classrooms and asked them a series of questions, she said.

"The kids came up with the questions. They were questions they wouldn't normally ask."

This helped the children learn more about their grandparents and other role models, Miss Stupples said.

The visitors were then invited back to the hall for lunch.
